Our harmonica sessions suit any size of group, from 5 to 5,000
No group is too big or small to be thoroughly entertained and given the opportunity to learn a brand new skill and to be part of a wonderful group performance. Get ready for lots of fun, fantastic entertainment and a memorable team musical experience. So, if you want an activity for a very small group of less than ten people in a friendly atmosphere, few team building options can rival our harmonica activity. At the other extreme, the sound produced by thousands of harmonicas playing as one is awe-inspiring!
Our harmonica expert will teach everyone from scratch how to play this unique and simple-to-use musical instrument. After some very basic steps, the room will buzz with the harmonica’s iconic sound and, before long, our resident expert will have everyone playing the right notes at the right time, together.
Your group will ultimately perform on its very own, either with the backing music provided or a real live band! The end result is always the same: a combined feeling of success and completion. So bring the spirit of rock and roll, or the depth of the Blues, to your next event!
Harmonica for an innovative conference ice breaker or evening entertainment
A surprise harmonica session works really well at conferences and business meetings, raising the energy level in the room and quickly getting people to interact with each other. Without the need for complex set-up or extra space requirements, the entire session is contained in one room.
Everyone starts on a level playing field, but will be playing in seconds. It’s a great team building activity as participants have to work together to create a unified group sound. After a fun-packed session, delegates go home with their own harmonica as a give-away.
We have so many options to make your session unique, including being able to write your own song.
Harmonica is perfect for interactive evening entertainment too. Bring any dinner to life with our live music option. We can provide a live band that not only plays for your entertainment and dancing, but can offer you an interactive harmonica session too. In this quick-fire fun surprise, your guests will learn, in real time, how to play along with the live band.
Learn a versatile instrument used in many difference music genres
The harmonica, colloquially known as the mouth organ, is now a widely-used instrument used in blues, classical music, jazz, country music, American folk music and rock and roll.
In the USA, the harmonica became very popular as a blues instrument from the 1930s, driven by musical giants including “Sonny Boy” Williamson, Little Walter and Rice Miller. These men moulded the sound of the Chicago-style blues harmonica with its various moods and voices. The next generation of harpmen, including Junior Wells, James Cotton, Paul Butterfield and Charlie Musselwhite, learned their art directly from the older masters and did much to further popularise the harmonica.
Throughout the sixties, many popular bands included the harmonica and helped establish it as a rock as well as a blues instrument.
In our workshops, you’ll get a sense of the rich history of the harmonica and its versatility as you learn to play different musical styles.
Expert harmonica facilitation by the very best
As with our other events, what sets our harmonica team building workshops apart is the quality of the facilitator, who displays unrivalled passion and knowledge of the instrument.
Steve, our head harmonica coach, took up the mouth organ 30 years ago and practices for five hours a day! He won national fame by graduating with a degree in playing the harmonica after wanting to pursue the instrument “to its limits”.
He is a performer, a session musician and also a producer, and has played with many acts, including Larry Adler, Chris Difford (Squeeze) and Screaming Lord Sutch. He has recorded albums with both the Royal Philharmonic and Prague Philharmonic Orchestras. Playing with a variety of bands, Steve has composed and played music for film, television and radio. He has recorded over 90 albums over the last 20 years, and taken part in over 4000 live concerts!
Steve has taught music at Further Education and Higher Education levels in colleges in Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, and is a fully qualified teacher with a PGCE. He has visited as a lecturer to a variety of universities, colleges and schools both in the UK and worldwide.
Speaking about the versatility of the harmonica, Steve told the BBC in an interview, “You can play classical, blues, folk and jazz. You can take it anywhere.”
According to Steve, the instrument is perfect for the absolute beginner. “It can be played by a four-year-old”, he says. Because the harmonica is so easy to pick up for a beginner, participants won’t feel uncomfortable or embarrassed trying to get a sound from the instrument.
These characteristics make the harmonica perfect for a short conference ice breaker or team building session. Within a short space of time, you will be amazed just how good you will sound!
